Established in 1959, the Central Library sits in the middle of the University Campus. It is a four storey building with a floor space of 17,372 square meters.
Service Counters, Self Charging Machines, Reference Desks, Free Range Readings and satellite TV (ASTRO) occupy the Ground Floor while Second Floor is set aside for Theses and Dissertations Collection, Pendeta Discovery terminals and study area. Third Floor is reserved for bound journals and reference hall while the fourth floor accommodates the Media Collection and bound journals. Second and above floors, similarly, shelve most of the library’s collection.
Full seating capacity is 1,608 and there are altogether 60 daily carrels with 21 set aside for the visually impaired. The Central Library also has 5 computer labs ie. Lab B, Lab C, Lab D and Lab S as well as computer facilities at every floor. Information skills programes are held in Lab C and D to educate users on the effective method of information searching using IT tools in the library.
The open stack collection consists of textbooks and monographs of various subjects acquired to support learning, teaching and research needs of the University. All academic staff, students and valid registered members of the Library are allowed to borrow from this collection.
Academic Reserve Collection consists of text book, suggested by lecturer for their students.
Reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, directories and resource guides to research are available.
UML subscribes to most of the core journals in various subject areas. Back issues (bound journals) are kept in the library.
The University of Malaya Library is offering its users the opportunity to sample this increasingly popular technology. UM Library Kindles are preloaded with Bestsellers, Popular, Motivational and Inspirational titles and more. Current library students and staff are eligible to borrow a Kindle for two weeks
This collection contains articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers and technical reports, newspapers in microfiche & microfilm format. The collection available at the Central Library.
The collection consists of theses and dissertations of postgraduate students of the University of Malaya and also selected titles from the National University of Singapore. This is a closed access collection.
This collection contains popular fiction and non-fiction books to browse and borrow. Light novels and reading collection such as motivational, biography, poetry collections, young adult fiction, humour, popular science writing, and much more written in English or Malay language.
The University of Malaya Library has a collection of media to support research and teaching and learning. Among the collections in the media unit are VHs, CDs, black plates, blu-rays. There is a collection that can only be used in the library using the equipment provided. In addition, non-academic materials such as movies can be borrowed according to loan eligibility
Computer labs within the Universiti Malaya library are equipped with an internet connection. We provided areas where you can bring your own device at Information Common (Level 3) and 24 hours area. Computer Lab B (32PCs) and Computer Lab C (20PCs) are designated for Postgraduate and research purposes ( Lab B and C) and disabled individuals (Lab S). Computer lab S intended specifically for the disabled individual (Lab S) which consist of 10 PCs. There are also computers that are open to the public to be used, including 10PCs located at the Collaborative Learning Area (CoLA), 6 OPAC PCs on the 2nd floor, and 20PCs at Digital Corner.
Any registered library member who wants to hold a private discussion may reserve a discussion room. The use of the room is limited to a maximum of two hours. Discussion rooms are located on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th level. To make a reservation, please go to the service counter at Level 1 and complete the reservation form one(1) day before the usage date. You may obtain the key from the service counter on the day of use.
The Library provides 39 carrel rooms for postgraduate students, academic staff and researchers. There are 21 carrel rooms prepared for the visually impaired students. Use of the rooms is on a first come first served basis. No reservations are allowed. Please go to the service counter at Level 1 to register and obtain the key.
Commercial vendors operate the photocopying services in the library. Services which are staff-operated and self-service are also provided. Every user must take notice and comply with the current Malaysia’s copyright law pertaining to reading material photocopy.
This Library is equipped with ‘internet without wire” or Wi-Fi signal. Access is also for users who bring laptop or tools that can be connected using this signal. Login Wifi using your registered UM email username and password. For visitors, please get the temporary password at the Information Desk.
Reading facilities are available on each Library floor. Users are advised to leave library books on trolleys after usage. Do not attempt to shelve used books. Shelving items in the wrong places will result in severe retrieval difficulties.
Self Returning Book Kiosk operates 24 hours a day. Users can used this facility to return books at any time and their records will be automatically updated.
Central Library has two Self Charging Machine. Students can charge their book on their own. They must keep the receipt for reference.
Library users can obtain leisure in this corner. There are also corner for Read@Uni programme.
Administration and Strategic Division is the main administrative office for the entire administration of the University of Malaya Library. All official matters relating to the library are handled by the Administration and Strategic Division including corporate communications for internal and external affairs.
The Cataloguing Unit provide access to scholarly materials in the UM Library collection to support research, teaching and learning in the UM community by organizing, describing, and providing effective, accurate tools that assist our clients in locating information resources of value to them.
User Services Section is responsible in providing effective services in meeting the needs of users, fulfill users satisfaction and also providing current information to users. The services provided to users are library material’s transaction (loan, return, renew, reserve), Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery, Library user’s Registration (internal user, external user), Information Desk Services and Services for locating unfound library materials.
The User Education Section offers information skills and user education programmes for undergraduates, postgraduates and Academic Staff. Our primary aim is to provide optimum service that satisfies the research needs of the many people who use the Library in an efficient, reliable, consistent and courteous manner.
Research Services Section was established with the aim of supporting research activities of the University and Library. This unit is primarily responsible for the preparation of various reports such as library resources statistics as well as monthly reports on University’s publication data indexed in Web of Science and Scopus.
