The library was established in 1959 and has a total collection of more than a million up to date titles. The library consists of a Central Library which provides library facilities for the whole campus. In addition to a network of branch and special libraries to meet the specific needs of some faculties.

INITIATIVES BY THE LIBRARY TO PRESERVE OUR SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND HISTORIC EVENT FROM THE PAST
The library has embarked on a journey to record and document ‘tacit knowledge’ of its retired scholars; many who are distinguished and reputable experts in their fields.
Collections donated by or obtained from famous individuals / scholars such as personal letters (Za'ba Collection), Ungku Abdul Aziz an academic and former UM Vice Chancellor, a Malay Nationalist Ibrahim Ya'kob and others
